Guangdong
Guangdong (in simplified Chinese广东省) is located at the southern tip of the
People's Republic of China. It is a coastal province. The provincial capital of
Guangdong Province is Guangzhou. Guangdong is located at the southern part of
Nanling as well as the South China Sea. It is located near Hong Kong, Macau,
Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi and Fujian border. Across the sea, you would be able to
reach Hainan. Guangdong has a unique culture of Lingnan, and the customs is
quite similar with Guangxi Province. Guangdong has a large area of rich land and
it is rich in water resources, and therefore, Guangdong is commonly known as the
fishing town. People living in Guangdong are called Cantonese people and these
Cantonese people are composed of three main groups, including the Hakka, the
Shanyou People and the Cantonese respectively. The three groups of people each
speak different languages, including the Cantonese, Hakka, Chaoshan words. Since
the reform and opening up, the Province has attracted a large number of
non-native populations and the province is getting more and more prosperous.
According to the National 1% Population Sample Survey 2005, by the end of 2005
the Guangdong province's total population was over 91,940,000 people. The birth
rate of the province is 11.7 %, with mortality rate 4.68 % and natural growth
rate of 7.02 %. This shows that the Province is growing in a very healthy and
natural way and therefore, in the future, it is expected that the province would
become more and more prosperous and become one of the most influential provinces
in China.
In fact, Guangdong Province is always one of the strongest provinces in terms of
economic development. According to preliminary accounts statistics, in 2005 the
province's GDP was 2.170128 trillion yuan, which has an increase of 12.5%. In
addition, Guangdong is also a continuous source of revenue for China for many
years.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the main sector of the Guangdong
economy has begun to shift from secondary industries to tertiary industries and
also the Provinces economy is having a transition from labor-intensive
production to technology-intensive production. The private sector has developed
rapidly and there are many high-tech enterprises established in Guangdong
Province, such as Huawei, ZTE, Actions, Tencent, etc. |
